Dr. Sofia Mavrikou is an Assistant Professor of Bioelectric Biosensors at the Department of Biotechnology of the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece. She holds a BSc in Biotechnology, an MSc in Bioactive Products and Protein Technology, and a PhD specializing in cell-based biosensors and in vitro toxicology. Her research interests include biosensors, bioelectricity, nanotechnology, biomaterials, biotechnology, bioactive compounds, natural products, and in vitro systems, with applications in food safety, environmental monitoring, diagnostics, and biotechnology.
She is the CEO and Co-Founder of Ce.B.Tec. P.C., an academic biotechnology spin-off company specializing in innovative biosensor technologies, rapid diagnostics, and cell-based bioassays. Through her leadership role, she actively promotes technology transfer, commercialization of research outcomes, and collaborations between academia, industry, and international stakeholders.
Dr. Mavrikou has participated in several European and national research and innovation projects, including Horizon Europe, Erasmus+, PRIMA, and MSCA initiatives. She is actively involved in the European University Alliance EU-CONEXUS, contributing to education, research, and international cooperation activities.
She is the author or co-author of 33 peer-reviewed scientific publications, 4 international book chapters, and numerous conference presentations. She has served as editor of an international scientific book, reviewer for international scientific journals, and is the holder of a national patent.
Dr. Mavrikou is a member of the Board of Directors of the Hellenic Biotechnology Cluster (HBio) and the Hellenic Association of Women University Professors. She is also actively engaged in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives as a member of the Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Committee of the Agricultural University of Athens.
Among her innovation achievements, she contributed to the development of a cell-based biosensor for SARS-CoV-2 detection that was awarded the 2nd Prize at the IDEA Incubator Competition (IDSA Foundation & Johnson & Johnson Innovation). In 2022, she also participated in the award-winning development of a biosensor platform for biodefense applications in the 1st Innovation and Technology Competition of the Hellenic Ministry of National Defence.
Her work combines scientific excellence, innovation management, entrepreneurship, and technology transfer, with a strong focus on sustainable, scalable, and data-driven biotechnology solutions.
